The Thunder 50 takes the simplicity of the Lightning 60 and adds a few features (which many customers would like) to make a pack, which gives you more options depending on your backpacking needs.
It has the simple lines of a climbing pack, but with a few extras. The long extended straps you may decide to cut short once you are happy that you may not need them.
The positives include a front mesh pocket, which isn’t huge, but certainly big enough to take a jacket and gloves, but not much else.
However there are two rows of daisy chain webbing which does allow all kinds of extras, helmets, bags or whatever to be strapped on during your hike.
The side mesh pockets will allow the compression strap to go either over or through the pocket, which is useful.
It has a removeable twin pocket floating lid, which offers rain protection and packing space for those who need it, and it saves weight for those who don’t.
At the end of all the webbing straps the ‘velcro-clasps’ which allow you to roll up the excess webbing and velcro it out of the way, are actually removeable. Therefore if you find these sticking to your gloves, it is easy enough to slide them off and replace them if you change your mind.
The T-Rex suspension system, is effective. However for those people who fall into the short height category will find the horizontal bar sometimes obstructs the upwards tilt of the head.
The hip belt is well padded and has a lower cynch strap to pull the back weight closer. The mesh pockets are good. Big enough to take a camera and more.
The twin draw cord works well to close the pack and there’s a lash strap for compression and security.
Access to the single main compartment is via the top, but also via the two front zips, which allows the pack to be opened while it is lying on it’s back. Making it easier to get to items which may be low down in the rucksack.
Thunder is a trekking pack with a superb weight to volume/feature ratio. The suspension system is quickly length adjustable and provides excellent fit, torso mobility and weight transfer. Three access options to the main compartment (top, front and side loading) allow simple packing and unpacking. A large front and two side stretch pockets offer additional storage space. A floating lid with inner and outer pockets and adjustable side compression straps increase carrying capacity for extended trips and expeditions.
Single compartment pack with optimized packsack size and shape: shallow depth for a close to body fit, perfect load control and transfer. Offers excellent freedom of movement.
T-Rex suspension system: single central aluminum (6061-T6) frame stay with upper load spreader for outstanding load control. Single frame stay anchor point allows torso and hip movement in all directions. Excellent back venting due to limited contact points. Elaborately shaped dual-density foam hipbelt is supportive and molds itself around the hip.
Large front panel access to the main compartment: dual vertical YKK zippers open the front flap for loading and unpacking and allow easy access to the interior.
Side compression straps double function as a front compression system as well. Comes handy when a wet tent fly or a sleeping pad needs to be strapped to the front of the pack.
4 base loops can be used to attach sleeping mats, tent etc. 2 ice tool and trekking pole loops.
Hydration system compatible: features a hydration tube port on both sides of the pack.
