Rose and I have had extensive experience with NeoAirs and in the two years of general use, we've come to trust the material and performance, which without fail has given us some very comfortable nights sleep.

The material, which appears very flimsy at first glance, has never let us down and although we always take a repair kit. It has never been used.

The new model I note comes with a repair kit, which is good of Thermarest I think, but I doubt you'll ever need it.

The R rating of this new model has increased and by tapering slightly the head and foot end, they have managed to shave off another 15% of weight, which is incredible.

The lengths for both the short and regular remain the same and the thickness is still a dizzy sleeping height of 2.5 inches off the ground.

If you plan to use these sleeping mats inside a Bivy Bag though, do give a thought to how much they reduce the capacity if you are broad chested. I used one of these inside the Rab Ascent Bivy Bag with a Rab Quantum 400 sleeping bag and the down was just starting to get compressed. Also inside certain tents with low inner mesh, such as the Terra Nova Competition that 2.5 inches does make a lot of difference.

And now the comments from Thermarest:

NeoAir™ technology changed what people expect from a backcountry mattress. Warm, comfortable and extremely lightweight, our next-generation NeoAir™ mattress delivers even greater performance than the original. The streamlined shape makes the XLite™ mattress ultra light and highly packable, while continuing to provide the comfort you need in the backcountry. Stuff sack and repair kit included.

  • Lightweight: Advanced fabrics and a tapered design make this the lightest mattress in the NeoAir™ collection – almost 15% lighter than the original.
  • Warm: Improved reflective layer recycles body heat and creates dual air pockets that conserve warmth.
  • Comfortable: Patent-pending Triangular Core Matrix™ construction provides unrivaled stability and support.
  • Ultra-Packable: Low-bulk materials make the XLite mattress the most compact NeoAir mattress ever – as packable as a water bottle.

Most comfortable night's sleep I've had when out and about. Lighter than my 3/4 size pad, keeps my legs warm, packs down to nothing. Very easy to fold away, and no fighting with the stuff sack. Was an expensive purchase earmarked for a long time, but I don't regret it.

Not as noisy as many people claim!

The thickness of this airbed is extraordinary for its weight. What a step up from the Karimats of the 1980s. It gave a good nights sleep even on very uneven and bumpy ground.

This is an excellent sleeping mat. Although it looks flimsy and thin, once its blown up, its far from that. This was purchased for a long distance walk from lands end to john o'groats but it will be getting used well before that. However, I must also comment on the service received from backpackinglight. It is second to none - for quickness of service, customer follow up, etc and of course the packet of skittles help too - nice touch. In my view this company is one of best in the country. Well recommended.

Better than i expected
Monday, 29 April 2013  |

I decided to invest in a descent sleeping mat as the foam offerings just went doing the job any more. when it arrived I was startled by the almost tin foil thinness of it in deflated form, thinking this will never support my 18st mass, but a few short breaths later and i was lying back for one of my most comfortable nights out doors for a while despite the ice on the ground around my bivi bag. I ordered the small as I plan to use it mostly in a bivi bag and I wanted to still have some room left, I sleep on my side and don't move about much but if you are a wriggler I could see you coming off in the night. I look forward to many more cosy nights in the wild now
