A right little hot performer!

This tough, light and very efficient meths stove is made from recycled aluminum bottles by Bill Ballowe in the US for Gossamer Gear and now us!

Measuring 60mm in diameter and 55mm high, it acts as both pot support and cooker and comes supplied with a light, soft aluminum heat reflector and windshield.

From the picture you'll see the 18 jets are just below the rim of the cooker which means the spread of the flames is slightly wider then you might think. This makes the cooker perfect when combined with pots of 90mm diameter or more.

In operation I was seriously impressed. It has a large filling hole so there's no spillage from the bottle. Maximum capacity is half way up the inner wall, which equates to 2floz or less of Meths.

Lighting the stove I used a flint and steel, and once lit you leave it for approximately a minute to prime. The side burner holes will suddenly ignite and this produces an even blue flame around the rim. During this time I put the windshield around the stove.

Using a wide 10cm base pot containing 500ml of cold water, it took just under 7 minutes for this to become a vigorous boil. I then left it on the stove for a further 8 minutes, and it continued to boil until the flame went out.

As the spread of the flames is pretty impressive, it is ideal to use it with a 10cm diameter pot to get the most from the heat.

During the podcast interview I did with Bill, he explains that he uses very little meths to bring the liquid to the boil, then removes the pan, adds the dried food and places inside a pot cosy for 10-15 minutes, for the perfect hot meal.

This stove is tough, light and small. It easily fits inside a small mug along with the windshield and heat reflector. It is ideal for someone looking for a good reliable meths cooking system to replace a heavy Trangia. Perfect for hikers and adventure racers alike.

white box duo stove
Thursday, 24 July 2014  |

Hi folks,

Some initial thoughts on the stove, wow its powerful, but unfortunately I woudn't recommend it for any pot smaller than 5 inches. I have a msr titan kettle, the flame went up the side and mettled my home made silicon handles. I hadn't realised that Bob only sold the duo not the solo. On the white box site it recommends that the duo is suitable for larger pots of 5 inches. The msr is less so the flames really do shoot up the sides. The advice I got from Bob was really helpful however I'm afraid it's to powerful for the titan, also note that the stove only comes with the heat shield not the reflector as stated. Ive just converted from gas stoves... To heavy and bulky, the search for the perfect meth stove continues...

White Box stove - " BRILL !!!!!! "
Wednesday, 21 May 2014  |

Not much to say really , It's just an excellent bit of kit ...boils 0.5 L of water much quicker than the trangia burner using my GSI S/S glacier kettle .The windshield wraps snugly tight around the burner and the fuel bottle fits inside and all goes neatly in the kettle along with the complete brew kit . Still have to try the stove out with my titanium 450 ml mug , but I have a feeling that the flame spread might be too large for the base of the mug but I am not certain , I'll have to wait and see .....................

White box magic

I am very pleased with this stove. It's well made, sturdy and light. It blooms quickly and I can get it to boil water in my 0.6l trangia kettle in 4 minutes. This is now going to be my main stove to take with me in my pack. Previously used to use a pocket rocket coupled with the minimalist but I'm getting better results with the white box stove. Excellent and friendly service from backpacking light, with a quick delivery time. I will definitely be using backpacking light in the future.

Super stove
Monday, 14 April 2014  |

I bought this a little under 2 weeks ago and I can say is its an amazing little stove I've used it several times I've used a trangia stove for many years and this out performs it the only bad thing I can say about this stove is it should come with a small bottle of meths so you can use it straightaway and it could do with a little sack with drawstring but thease would add to the cost

White box stove - used solo & in M Kette
Friday, 14 February 2014  |

I already have one of these and have just ordered a second as I prefer to keep the original for use in the M Kettle, in which its performance is phenomenal. Used in this it is more stable, and the problem with the wide flare of the flames is negated, no heat being wasted. Don't try looking down the chimney to admire the inferno though, as the foot long flame may remove your eyebrows!

White box stove

Very good little stove. Starts up very fast and kicks out an amazing amount of heat. I've found that less is more regarding alcohol in this one. If you fill this right up then the start up is quite slow, but put between 5 and 10ml in it and it blossoms in under 30 seconds. Quite prone to wind, but in the honey stove (in 4 side config) it worked very well. Highly recommended!

White Box Stove

This Stove arrived quickly, and I thought I would test it out right away. So I set about unboxing and setting up the stove and wind shield, leaving a gap of 1" as directed by the instructions that came in the box. I filled the stove as directed, being careful not to over fill the stove. Measured out two mugs of water and poured the water into my kettle. I then lit the stove, which did take a little effort as it was only 2 degrees C outside on a cold slab. After about 1:45 the stove bloomed. I timed the rolling boil time for 2 mugs of water and it took 5:25. So I was very pleased with this boil time. The stove did burn for another 4-5mins before the fuel ran out. So the only point I would make is learn to measure how much fuel you need and mark that out on your fuel bottle as you donít get a snuffer to out the flames. With a burn time of about 10 minutes youíre not going to be able to cook a Sunday dinner on this stove, but thatís not really what this stove is all about. If you want to boil up some water for a quick brew then I would recommend this little lite wonder of a meths stove.

Just what I wanted
Monday, 20 January 2014  |

What a perfect stove. It boiled 700ml of water in about 7 minutes and burned less than 50ml of meths to do it.
It's also so small and light that you really wouldn't even know you're carrying it.
All in all a great little stove and perfect for the solo hiker.

Lovely little stove, burns beautifully and boils water faster than any other alcohol stove I've tried. Much tougher than your ordinary soft drink can stove. This could very well be the last stove I will ever need to buy! (Sorry, Bob and Rose, but it's that good!)
