MOD Bivvybag
We've just sourced a great value for money NEW bivvybags from some military suppliers which may help those who want to try the bivvy experience, without worrying about damaging the thinner material as used in the Rab Survival Zone, which we also sell.
There's a fair amount of durable material used in this product reflected in the weight which is 840g. It arrives in a natty mesh stash bag. Packed down it measures 21cm x 13cm. See the comparison in the photo gallery.
Material described as Water Vapour Permeable (similar in performance to Goretex and Event) and the head end has a simple draw string hood. This is a very roomy bag, with enough space in it to change clothes (a bit of a wriggle) and stuff your small rucksack in with you.
With completely breathable bivvy bags it is advisable to place the sleeping mat outside of the bag as this ensures maximum release of humidity. It also means you can sit up easily! A head net usually helps when placed over the face it you are troubled by insects.
There is an art to bivvying and staying comfortably dry in various conditions. Humidity is the main problem in the UK, and experience can help choose the better nights for a wild camp.
In an emergency situation a bivvy bag saves lives and I feel it is better to carry one which will make the enforced bivvy experience more pleasant than the traditional heavy orange plastic bag, which sometimes weighs as much as 900g!
The answer of course is a simple tarp system to cover the head end of the body, and this allows maximum airflow around the head, and protection from the worst elements as you prepare your equipment or food.
