The idea of saving a considerable amount of fuel and maintaining heat in your cooking pot (instead of simmering) by adding a layer of insulation in the form of a pot cosy isn't new.

If you are a user of freeze dried packet food. You know what its like to taste your meal  getting colder as you try to eat it as fast as you can before it turns unpleasant. Wouldn't it be great to have some kind of cosy to keep it warmer longer?

Finally, how about an inexpensive  lightweight windshield you could fold and keep 'inside' your cook set for those 'uberlight' days.

Gossamer gear sell a great many of thier cosy covers which work in conjunction with their own sized cooksets. We've now found the same highly heat reflective and insulated material and there's enough in the sheet provided in this kit, to make two or three pot cosy's and have enough left over to use as a effective windshield. For really cold conditions you could make a cosy 'double thick' for even more insulation.

All you will need is a pair of scissors, a marker pen, some gaffa or aliminium tape and ten minutes of your time. Blue Peter badge optional.

Simply put the cookpot on the sheet, mark around it loosely and cut out the circle. Then decide how high you want the sides to allow for 'roll over' at the top, and then cut enough to go around the outside of the pot. Don't make it too tight a fit though, to allow you to get the pot in.

Invert the pot onto something which will lift it above the work surface such as a coiled magazine and put the material in place. Use a few small strips of gaffa to stick it all together and cut out any holes for handles as you see fit. Job done!

Use the same method to create a custom cosy holder for packet food and give you self a flat bottom, so the packet can stand while it keeps warm.

In use. Bring your food to the boil as per the cooking instructions, then shut off the gas. Carefully slide the complete pot into the cosy, fold down the lid and wait the normal simmering time or slightly longer. In tests we have found 500ml of boiled water will still be too hot to touch after 30 mins.

When using this material near to a flame as a windshield, be aware that direct intense heat will melt the isulation sandwiched between the aluminium foil. However it is flame resistant and the foil can still be used as a windshield.
