Sometimes you need a little help igniting wood, or Esbit tablets with a flint and steel and this is just the answer.
It is an eco-friendly flammable piece of impregnated material of a fibrous nature, which once ignited burns slowly like a candle.
Only a small amount is required and it makes a great alternative to finding dry Silver Birch Bark or using tampons, which sometimes burn too quickly.
The pack consists of 6 sheets of card, each 20cm x 10cm, perforated into 30 strips. From experience I find I only need a 3cm x 3cm piece to get my Bush Cooker or Honey Stove going.
So in essence one pack is enough to light 120+ fires.
The technique I learned from Colin Ibbotson on the last TGO Challenge, who used a Bushbuddy the whole 2 week trip.
Take a 3cm x 3cm piece and split it in two. Put one half in the cooker and build a small 'temple fire' over it using dry twigs. Light the second piece with a flint and steel, and use it like a slow burning match, placing it on top of the first piece under the twigs.
Enough heat is generated to get most damp twigs burning and once this is lit, the fire can easily be increased.
In the case of an Esbit tablet. I would use a flint and steel to light a very small piece of it and then place the tablet on top, allowing the flames to catch.
And it is biodegradable too!
