Want to go really lightweight and be a 567g purist with a 4°C quilt?

This bag is designed for the ultra-light purist on a mission (but also turns out to work great for the fair weather car-camper who demands the finest.)

My experience using the 3 Season Quilt
In use, you have two options. One is to unclip the lower straps to convert it to a standard quilt, albeit with a foot box. Ideal for warmers nights, hammock use and general summer night.

The main intended use during colder weather, is to slide your sleeping mat (I used a 3/4 NeoAir) into the bag so it sits on top of the lower straps and then wriggle into it (I also use a Mummy sleeping sheet which helps). Thus my feet were in the foot box, my body was in the sleeping sheet with my back lying on the pad and bag above and tucked in around me.

Q: Does it go right to the floor edge? A: Yes. Q: Is there a draft? A: No. Q: Is it as warm as a normal bag? A: Very much so if not more! There is no zip, but there is a toggle to tighten the bag around the neck. Obviously my head was exposed, so I wore a hat and leaned against my rucksack as a pillow.

The resulting night's sleep was certainly warm and comfortable, however using a Quilt/Top Bag in this way has certain sleeping limitations to be aware of which may, or may not suit your nature. Because the bag is held in place by your body weight, when you turn over to lie on your side, the bag stays where it is.  Also it prevents you from sitting up, so there's a routine of unclipping the neck to release you (and the heat) and thus you are free.

I did try using it, with the straps unclipped, with the bag just lay across me with my feet in the foot box. But it was unsuccessful on a cold night and slipped off.

Product Care

Washing

It’s best to hand-wash your sleeping bag. Fill a bathtub with warm water, soak the bag, add a gentle soap such as Woolite (or even better, Nikwax Down or Tech Wash), kneed the soapy water through the baffles, and then rinse until the rinse water is fairly clean. To dry, follow the instructions below.

It is possible to machine-wash down and synthetic sleeping bags. First, though, consider the following factors:

* The impeller in a top-loader washing machine treats insulated items harshly.

* The perimeter and baffle seams can tear, especially when the insulation is wet (thus heavier).

* Normal household detergents will strip the natural oils from down, and residues from these cleaners will degrade the DWR-finish of the shell fabric.

Therefore, if you are going to machine-wash your sleeping bag, we recommend that you:

* Use the gentle cycle on a front-loader washing machine, and

* Use a mild detergent such as Woolite or an insulation-specific soap like NikWax Down Wash.

* Rinse it more than once. This will remove detergent residue, which will improve overall performance.

Drying

Particularly in the case of down bags, drying is as important as washing. Down bags can appear to be dry from the outside while, in fact, its care is still damp, which can lead to mildew.

Using a tumble-dryer is recommended. Place a tennis ball in the drum with the bag to "fluff" it up as it rotates. Commercial dryers have larger drums than home machines and are therefore preferable if several items are being dried at the same time.

If you air-dry your down bag, remember to shake it regularly during the drying process to prevent clumps from forming.
