At last a British Made Pair of Lightweight Poles, which are strong, compact, able to perform on the hill and folds down small enough to slot into your rucksack. And they come in different colours too - just perfect! Available in a variety of fixed lengths of 110cm to 130cm they arrive in a neat mesh pouch for storage. Weighing in at only 131g to 143g per pole they are lighter than any carbon based pole currently available. Just pull the cord running down the shaft and they lock into place! The wrist loop is fixed, so no fiddling as you walk. The hand grip is of the 'firm foam' airflow variety, not the normal hard material. Made from 11mm 7075 Aluminium Alloy, the standard carbide tip will give you miles of wear along with the exchangeable trekking basket. How do they perform? We've had ours a few years now using them to run with on the hills for a OMM Mountain Marathon and for casual walks whenever we can. Great for climbing fast and supporting our balance when descending at speed. When you accidentally apply pressure (staggering!) the 11mm aluminium certainly flexes more than the normal carbon poles we've used. An excessive 'full weight fall' will bend the poles of course. In the last couple of years these poles have become the item of choice for Marathon Des Sables competitors and other Adventure Racers. As light as they are, they do catch the breeze in a strong cross wind, so you have to be careful not to trip over a pole by accident! Conclusion? We love them! They have now become our pole of choice, especially as they will compact down small enough to pack either in the rucksack, or clipped onto the shoulder harness by shockcord, ready for use. In the off chance a pole should be damaged by a heavy fall preventing it's use. All spare parts are available from Mountain King a great little British company based up in Newcastle, where their factory overlooks Hadrian's Wall. Therefore spare parts are easy to obtain if you ever need them. Which size do I need? Hold you forearms parallel to the ground and measure the distance from the top of your fist to the floor. If you are between sizes, go for the nearest pole measurement. Your hand movement is more effective holding a pole and pushing down, rather than pulling up! Details: 110cm Pole. Weight Each: 131g. 30 April 2018 | Deirdre I bought those poles (110 cm) to start hiking during more than one day and they are great ! I used them on a 2 days hike trough mud and snow with no problem (use the gaskets). When stuck, they bend without breaking (if you are careful while removing). I used them to support all my all weight on a descent (which is quite high with my backpack) without problem. 12 November 2017 | Timo Bought a pair for my sister for her trip to Peru. She has been very happy and marvelled the lightness. This review has not been appraised.
07 June 2017 | David The poles are the lightest and most compact, yet still very strong, that I have experienced. They are quick to assemble, though not adjustable - so get the right size. Delivery was very prompt too. I fully recommend the product and the service from backpacking light.com. This review has not been appraised.
10 February 2017 | Terence Easy to extend and secure, comfortable hand grips that absorb sweat well and soooo soooo light This review has not been appraised.
20 August 2014 | Christoffer Im using the poles for running in mountains. They are easy to use and fits my needs perfect. When im not using them i just click them on the back of an Ultimate Direction vest. I live in sweden and wanna say thanks for great service and fast shipping. This review has not been appraised.
29 June 2014 | William Used for a 2 week trek on the GR20. Chosen mainly because they pack small enough to fit inside a rucksack for travel. They were surprisingly sturdy and did the job well. The length is not adjustable but that did not really bother me much. This review has not been appraised.
14 October 2013 | John These poles are simply amazing. Incredibly strong considering how light weight they are and fold up to easily tuck away in our pack. I have used them to training for the North Pole dragging tyres and for trekking in the desert. I am about to use them for climbing the 'Mountains of the Moon'. Backpacking light is also a great supplier who know their stuff and really go the extra mile to help. I have just recommended these poles to a friend doing the MDS this year. 3 of 3 people found this review helpful.
