There are not many 60 lt packs which weigh in under 1kg and offer reasonable functionality, however the Naukan reminds me of the first generation of simple lightweight packs from a few years back. Only this time the newer lighter Raptor fabric has been used and mixed with the established velcro based back adjustment system with slim line compression straps the result offers a generous pack which Montane say will carry up 15kg. Lighter pack, lighter belt and strap padding, lighter fabrics also means you need to carry lighter contents, so this pack isn’t for heavy duty people wanting it to perform like the traditional cordura packs. Although the belt is missing pockets (you can retro fit these), there are 2 reasonable lower pack pockets which can be reached on either side when wearing the pack. There are also 2 larger front pockets to stash wet tents or bulky clothing for quick access, which although not mesh, do have a drain hole at the bottom. Down the front of the pack there’s a couple of hidden clips tucked away for the walking poles to split quickly into. The top pocket has a central zip, sadly not waterproof, however the pocket offers a reasonable storage space for munchies and extras. It is good to see they have removed the hydration slot on the inside of the pack, although the velcro tab is still there to attach it to. This means you can fold your sleeping mat flat and place it along the frame, which leaves you with a huge volume of packing space. Although they suggest a max carry weight of 15kg, I would suggest that 12kg would be more sensible. Therefore I would suggest this pack is ideal for the person wanting to save weight on a long hiking trip. Manufacturers comments; For those looking to save every gram on long distance treks, the Naukan 60 offers unrivalled carry comfort with the supportive ZephyrAD adjustable back system and an uncompromised feature set, all at a staggering 900g.
